Gisbert Näther
About the composer
Gisbert Näther was born on July 30, 1948 in Ebersbach (Upper Lusatia). He studied horn and composition at the Carl Maria von Weber Academy of Music in Dresden. After the state examination he worked as a horn player in the Jena Philharmonic and at the Potsdam Hans-Otto-Theater. In 1981 he switched to the DEFA Symphony Orchestra (now the German Film Orchestra).
Gisbert Näther has composed for traditional chamber music ensembles, but also for less everyday ones – e.g. a work for 12 bassoons. In addition, his compositional repertoire contains quite a few pieces for school music. After 1992 he wrote works for a large orchestra – with and without soloists, premiered by the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Berliner Symphoniker and the German Film Orchestra, among others.
Many of his children’s plays are becoming increasingly popular. For many years he was a member of the German Composers’ Interest Group and the Brandenburg Association for New Music.
Gisbert Näther passed away in Berlin on November 9th, 2021.
