Anton Viskov
About the composer
The Moscow composer Anton Viskov is undoubtedly one of the most productive and versatile representatives of contemporary Russian liturgical music. He studied composition at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory and worked as a composer and conductor for the state television and radio company “Ostankino”, where he was involved in the production of more than 150 films and programs. Today, he is engaged in successful research as a music historian, conducts in-depth studies of Russian folk music, publishes forgotten works of Russian composers, and moderates television and radio programs and concert series.
He is a member of several national and international forums and artistic associations and has received several awards for his activities in various musical and cultural fields.
Viskov is the composer of around 200 secular and sacred choral works, including cantatas, oratorios, and longer compositions.

Textual variations: | Initially, Viskov composed this Stabat Mater in Latin, but then, at the request of the Cathedral of the Roman Catholic Church in Moscow (with which he has long collaborated), he selected an equirhythmic translation of the words of Russian classical poets (Vasily Zhukovsky, a friend of Pushkin, Afanasy Fet, Lev Mey, and Dmitry Merezhkovsky, a poet of the Russian Silver Age). The work has not yet been performed in Russian. Some stanzas are sung twice. The Amen is a separate part. |

Mr. Viskov was immediately willing to send me the recording and the score of his Stabat Mater. The recording from Moscow is truly remarkable. It is the premiere from April 14, 2019, at Rachmaninoff Hall, Moscow State Conservatory named after P.I. Tchaikovsky. A stunning performance with brilliant soloists. With the participation of the “Blagovest” Ensemble of Soloists, artistic director G. Koltsova. |
