José Joaquim dos Santos
About the composer
José Joaquim dos Santos was born in 1747 in Óbidos, Portugal. When he was about 6 years old he entered the Seminary of the Patriarchal Church where he stayed and finally became First Music Master. He also seems to have been a tenor singer in a monastery. His Stabat Mater must have been regarded as something special, as it was the only sacred vocal work that was printed in Lisboa in the second half of the 18th century. Apart from this one he composed another three Stabat Mater works. He died probably in 1801, as in that year about 50 masses were said on behalf of his soul.
