David Bednall
About the composer
David Bednall was born in 1979 and studied in Sherborne and then at The Queen’s College, Oxford where he was Organ Scholar. He is a composer and an organist, combining an extensive freelance career with the position of Sub Organist at Bristol Cathedral, PhD Studies in Composition with Professor John Pickard at the University of Bristol and Directorship of the University Singers. He studied with Dr Naji Hakim and David Briggs. Between 2002 and 2007 he was at Wells Cathedral, initially as Sub Organist and then as Assistant Organist. He is active as a composer and his first CD of his choral music – Hail gladdening Light with Wells Cathedral Choir under Matthew Owens – was Gramophone Editor’s Choice and a second – Flame Celestial – received much critical praise. Particulars: | David writes about his setting of the Stabat Mater: "The idea of setting the Stabat Mater is one which had been in my mind for a number of years, and following long discussion with Edward Whiting (for whose choir I had written Requiem in 2008), we settled on this, and decided on the choice of instrumentation. My next challenge was the approach to the in musical terms. I have long loved and admired the settings of Palestrina, Pergolesi and from the twentieth century Szymanowski and Herbert Howells. This last work is undoubtedly the one which has influenced me most. |
