Meingosus Gaelle (or Ernestus Weinrauch?)
About the composer
According to the CD this is a work by Meingosus Gaelle, but Torsten Mario Augenstein informed me that his research on life and works of Ernestus Weinrauch leads to the conclusion that not Gaelle, but Weinrauch should be named as composer.
Torsten found two original manuscripts of the Stabat Mater with the name Weinrauch on it. Father Ernestus Weinrauch (baptized Faustinus) was born in 1730 and stayed a large part of his life in the monastery of Zwiefalten, Oberschwaben, Germany, where he composed masses, a requiem, a number of Salve Regina and Ave Regina compositions, several offertories and oratoria. He died there in 1793.
Meingosus Gaelle (1752-1828) was born in Buch bei Tettnang, Germany. In 1771 he entered the Weingarten monastery, where he stayed until it was closed in 1802. He was a doctor of theology and of philosophy and a teacher of mathematics and physics. He wrote a book on his experiments with electrical capacitors. Beside all that he composed numerous works: songs, church music, chamber music and a comic opera. He was a virtuoso player of the harp and the harpsichord.

| Particulars: | The Stabat Mater recorded on this CD, dedicated to the composers who lived and worked in the Weingarten convent, is not complete. Clearly it was abridged to leave some space for the other compositions. Five stanzas are missing. The remaining piece is divided in 6 sections. The composer seems to have been a happy man, for his work sounds rather optimistic for such a sad subject. The style reminds me of Schubert and Mozart. |
