Pawel Lukaszewski
About the composer
Pawel Lukaszewski was born in Czestochowa, Poland, in 1968. He studied cello and composition and followed a postgraduate choirmaster course and other courses for computer music and contemporary music. He also graduated from the Cultural Management School at Poznán. His music was performed at festivals all over the world, and he was awarded several prizes. Sacred choral music is an important part of his repertoire.
About the Stabat Mater

| Particulars: | A work full of dissonances and contrasts. Though there are no obvious divisions, I feel that at least five parts can be discerned. The first part is characteristic for the piece, were a choir sings in long drawn sentences, superposed with a kind of undulating way of singing by another choir. The second part starts with the almost unchanged plain chant melody of the Stabat Mater, which then develops slowly into the dissonants of the first part. In the third part this is repeated, though the plain chant is not as pure as in the second part. In the fourth part the "undulating" singing is very pronounced. The last part shows reminiscences of the plain chant again, ending with repeated singing of "amen", where the dissonances are slowly resolved. |
