Sami Klemola
About the composer
Sami Klemola was born in 1973. He studied guitar and musicology and took courses in composition and improvisation. Beside working as a composer, he is still studying composition at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. His more traditional compositions are mainly chamber music and choral works, but he participates in performance art and has made several improvisation-based recordings.

| Particulars: | The composition is divided into four parts. The longish instrumental intro is characteristic for the composition, as the orchestra, mostly somber and full of dissonances, plays an important role. Only in the last part the tempo is faster, but the dissonances do not disappear until the final "Amen". Most notable in the singing is a very long single note on the first syllable of the third stanza, which goes on a full thirty seconds. |
| Textual variations: | The text of the "Vatican"-version is used, but the stanzas 4, 7, 8, 13 and 15 to 18 are omitted. Stanza 19 has been replaced by the one of the "Analecta"-version. |

| More info: | This CD is a recording of a number of works, that have been commissioned by Rita Varonen, conductor of the Cantinovum chamber choir of Jyväskylä, Finland. As they have somewhat of a tradition to perform a new Stabat Mater each Easter, the CD contains no less than three Stabat Mater compositions. Recorded in the Saarijärvi Church in 1999. |
