About the composer
Hawar Tawfiq was born in 1982 in Sulaymania, a city in the North of Iraq (Kurdistan). He started to study the violin in 1992 at the Institute of Fine Arts in Sulaymania. In 1998 he fled to the Netherlands. At the Conservatory in Tilburg he studied violin and composition. From the beginning his compositions have been characterised by the combination of elements from Western music culture and influences from the Kurdish tradition. In 2013 Tawfiq was commissioned by the Stabat Mater Foundation to compose a Stabat Mater on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the Foundation.
About the Stabat Mater
Male choir, string ensemble, harp, flutes and percussion
All stanzas are sung in Gregorian music by a male choir: the composer was not completely free in composing this work. He was asked to use the Gregorian version of Stabat Mater as a starting point. His composition is divided into five sections. Every section begins or ends with an extended instrumental introduction or comment on the latin text.
All stanzas are sung. The "Vatican"-version of the text is used.
