Evert van Merode
About the composer
Evert van Merode (1980, The Netherlands) studied piano at the Fontys Conservatory Tilburg with Joop Celis and Bart van de Roer. He also studied cultural sciences at the University of Tilburg. After his piano-graduation he took composition lessons with Willem Jeths in Amsterdam. As a church musician he is working in the Dominicus church in Amsterdam. He is also conductor of two choirs: Nootabene (in Utrecht) en Kleinkoor XingNu (in Tilburg).
In recent years he mainly composed choral works (including liturgical music) and chamber music. Together with fellow musician Arjan van Baest, he is co-founder of the Foundation Music Now. In 2018 this foundation released the CD Dreams on Music.
About the Stabat Mater

| Particulars: | In 2011 the Foundation Music Now commissioned a relatively short work for mixed choir and piano on the text of (parts of) the Stabat Mater. The premiere was 2012 Good Friday. In 2013 van Merode arranged the piano part for harp, violin and cello. Gregorian elements and mainly French impressionist sounds alternate. The opening and closing parts are written in the Locrian scale, one of the seven major church keys. The composer strived to compose music that not only appeals to the imagination, but also can be performed by amateur choirs, singing in a church setting. Stanza 16 is in Modo Gregoriano |
