Thirteenth-century poem
At the heart of this publication lies the poignant thirteenth-century poem, the Stabat Mater, portraying a mother’s anguish witnessing her son’s crucifixion. For centuries, this timeless verse has inspired composers to create soul-stirring music, while painters, sculptors, choreographers, writers across various mediums have responded to its emotive themes.
Serendipitous Discovery
The musical odyssey of Hannie van Osnabrugge began thirty years ago when she joined a choir and discovered Haydn’s Stabat Mater. Moved by the music, her husband, Hans van der Velden, embarked on a quest to collect all available Stabat Maters on CD. Hannie later used his collection as the basis to create the Ultimate Stabat Mater Website, which now attracts visitors from around the world.
Worldwide encounters
Stabat Mater Dolorosa takes the reader on a journey to the picturesque town of Todi in Umbria, widely believed to be the birthplace of the Stabat Mater’s poet. The book explores the profound connection between the Stabat Mater and the Requiem of Russian poet Anna Akhmatova. Along her journey, Hannie forms a meaningful connection with a seventeen-year-old English student who translated the Stabat Mater from Latin to German out of sheer passion for its text and themes.
Captivating storytelling
Through captivating storytelling, the book navigates through historical places, rituals, artworks, and performances, offering readers a rich tapestry of cultural exploration across the centuries.
