Claudio Casciolini
About the composer
Claudio Casciolini (1697-1760) was born in Rome, Italy. From 1726 until his death in 1760 he was choir leader and conductor at the Basilica San Lorenzo in Damaso, Rome and a member of the Congregation and Academy of St. Cecilia.
Casciolini wrote only church music.

| Particulars: | This Stabat Mater reminded me of the work of Palestrina. The even stanzas are in plainsong. I just found out (October 2018) that stanzas 5-8 and 13-16 has been left out in the performance on CD 1. The work originally piece exists of 20 stanzas! That is why the length of the work on CD 1 is only 7.08 minutes. |
| Textual variations: | The "Vatican" version of the text has been used. Stanza's 5, 6, 7, 8, 13, 14, 15 and 16 are omitted,NB: not by the composer but by the performers on CD 1. On CD 2 all 20 stanzas are sung. I did not know that till I listened CD 2 (Spirit, Strength & Sorrow) in 2018. |

| More info: | Recorded in May 6 & 7, 2006 in Elisabeth’s Church on the Auraria Campus. The music on this cd corresponds to the “stations of the cross”, a collection of both scriptural and legendary incidents associated with Christ’s final path to Calvary and his crucifixion there. The choir performs works from the 16th to 21st centuries, following the Via Crucis and ending with a prelude to Easter. I ordered the cd through the website of the St. Martins Chamber Choir. (www.stmartinschamberchoir.org). The producers of this CD have omitted stanzas 5-8 and 13-16. The original composition by Casciolini has twenty stanzas. |
