Antonio Lotti
About the composer
Antonio Lotti was probably born in Venice, Italy, in 1667. His place of birth is not completely clear, however. His father was director of the chapel in Hanover, Germany, so it is possible that he was born there. He studied with Giovanni Legrenzi in Venice and composed his first opera in 1683. In 1692 he was appointed second organist of the San Marco cathedral, and in 1704 became first organist. In 1736 he was appointed maestro di capella of the San Marco, a post he held until his death in 1740. He composed many operas, and was invited to come to Dresden, where he stayed some years, to compose an opera for the crown prince of Saxony. Antonio Lotti was a composer who combined the idioms of the late Baroque with early Classicism. He composed numerous masses, hymns, psalms and oratoria. He is especially famous for his four-voice “Miserere” that was yearly performed in the San Marco for almost a century.
About the Stabat Mater
Date: | ca. 1720 |
Performers: | Mixed choir and organ |
Length: | 4.07 minutes |
Particulars: | This choral work, sung in Italian, is probably a hymn, based on the Stabat Mater poem. |
Textual variations: | The text is clearly based on the Stabat Mater, though not a direct translation. With help of my friend Klaas de Jong I made following translation. One can recognize the stanzas 1, 2, 9 and (maybe) 10: Stave Maria dolente senza respiro e voce mentre pendeva in croce del mondo Il Redentor. |
