Franz Schubert
About the composer
Franz Schubert (1797 – 1828) was born in Lichtental, Austria. He was a religious man, and he composed church music during his whole life, but it seems that he had a strong feeling against the Catholic church of his time. In the Masses he composed he never set the words “Et in unam sanctam, Catholicam et apostolicam ecclesiam“, so that only by special pontifical dispense they are allowed to be used within the liturgy in Austrian and Bavarian churches. In 1815 Schubert attempted a first setting of the Stabat Mater, and restricted himself to the first four verses, but a year later he composed another on a much more grand scale.

About the Stabat Mater
Date: | 1816 |
Performers: | Soprano, tenor, bass, choir and orchestra |
Length: | CD 1: 38.01 minutes , CD 2: 38.17 minutes and CD 3: 35.42 minutes |
Particulars: | The Stabat Mater in f minor, D.383 is not a real Stabat Mater in the sense of this collection, as it does not use the text of the poem. Nevertheless, it is a beautiful composition. |
Textual variations: | The text is not the "Jacopone"-text, but a German text of the poet Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock, who made a very free adaptation of the original poem. Not only the rhythm and the rhyming scheme were altered, but the content too. For instance, Klopstock changed the perspective completely from Maria as a centerpoint to Jesus, as we can see from the first stanza: "Jesus Christ hangs on the cross. His bleeding head hangs down in the blood of the night of death". In fact, not a "Stabat Mater" but a "Pendebat Filius". |
