About the composer
Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber was Born in Wattenburg in Bohemia (nowadays Stráž pod Ralskem in the Czech Republic). Today he is best known for his instrumental works and his sonatas for accompanied and unaccompanied violin. Lesser known are his nine masses, two requiems, settings for vespers and other liturgical music, composed after 1670 when he was in the service of Archbishop of Salzburg Maximilian Gandolph von Khuenburg. In 1679 he was appointed deputy Kapellmeister by Emperor Leopold I. After the death of Andreas Hofer in 1684 he became Kapellmeister and Dean of the choir school. In 1690 Emperor Leopold presented Biber with the rank of knight and the title of Biber von Bibern. That is why we know that his Stabat Mater dates from after 1690, as the manuscript materials include the noble title “de” as part of his identification.
