Nicola Logroscino
About the composer
Nicola Logroscino was born in Bitonto in Italy in 1698. He first studied with his uncle, Pietro Logroscino, maestro di cappella at the Cathedral of Bitonto, before furthering his studies at the Conservatory of Santa Maria di Loreto in Naples. In 1728 he had his first professional post as a organist at the archbishopric of Conza, where he composed the oratorio Il mondo trionfante nella conzezione di Maria sempre Virgine. He then settled in Naples and dedicated himself to composing comic opera’s. Some people considered him as the inventor of the Opera Buffa.
In 1758 he was called to Palermo, where he set up permanent residence in order to fill the post of maestro di cappella at the Conservatorio dei Figliuoli dispersi. In 1760 he composed his Stabat Mater. In these years he received commissions from several theatres. He probably died in 1764.
About the Stabat Mater
Date: | 1760 |
Performers: | Soprano, contralto, violins and basso continuo |
Length: | 39.20 minutes |
Particulars: | Logroscino's Stabat was written in Palermo in 1760. The work reflects, both stylistically and formally, the methods used by Pergolesi in his own Stabat Mater (1732). His composition work has 14 parts,.The 14 parts are, as in Pergolesi's composition, alternately sung by the soprano, the contralto and a duet of contralto and soprano. Three stanza's are sung as a recitative: (9) Eia, Mater fons amoris, (13) Fac me tecum pie flere and (19) Christe cum sit hinc exire. I love the duet Vidit suum dulcem natum! It is only 1.09 minute but so beautiful! |
Textual variations: | The Vatican-version of the text has been used except for stanza 5: "Christi Matrem si videret" in stead of "Matrem Christi si videret". All 20 stanzas are sung. The work ends with a final "Amen". |
