About the composer
Alphons Johannes Maria Diepenbrock (1862-1921) was born in Amsterdam in, where he studied Latin and Greek. He is regarded as one of the most important Dutch composers. The style of his – predominantly vocal – works is a mixture of the Romanticism of Wagner, the asceticism of Palestrina and the impressionism of the Debussy.
Diepenbrock composed numerous songs, with piano or orchestral accompaniment, works for choir a cappella, or with orchestra, and music for several plays. He was a personal friend of Gustav Mahler.
He died in Amsterdam in 1921.
