Jan Engel
About the composer
Very little is known about Jan Engel. He was a composer, conductor and musical publisher who spent the last twenty years of his life in Warsaw and died there in 1788. As a Chapel Master at the Cathedral in Warsaw he opened in 1771-1772 a printing press which operated until 1776. In 1772 he published six of his own symphonies, each separately, with identical title pages, and sold them through the Warsaw booksellers. Copies of the first three symphonies are preserved in the Pauline Monastery in Częstochowa, the others are known only from announcements in the Warsaw press.
