Ermano Maggini
About the composer
Ermano Maggini was born in Intragna, Tessin in Switzerland in 1931. He studied at the Musikakademie Zürich and for a short time at the Academy in Barcelona, Spain. In Zürich he founded a school for guitar playing and he worked as a teacher at other schools, for instance the Kantonsschule Wiedikon. Maggini’s 55 compositions – chamber music, vocal music, works for soli and orchestra – all appeared within about twenty years. His vocal music should always be seen as sacred music, including his settings of modern poems. Maggini died in 1991 in his place of birth.

| Particulars: | The Stabat Mater was commissioned by the Kantonsschule Wiedikon. It does not have clearly discernable divisions and moves along in a slow, measured pace, sometimes resembling a funeral procession. Often strongly discordant sounds can be heard, emphasizing the somberness of the text. |
