György Orbán
About the composer
György Orbán was born in 1947 in Romania though his parents were Hungarian. In 1979 he moved to Hungary, where he still lives, working as a music editor for Editio Music, and teaching at the Ferenc Liszt Academy for Music in Budapest. He wrote two Stabat Mater compositions for mixed choir a cappella—one in A major, composed in 1987, and the other in F major, composed in 1995. Both are described here.

About the Stabat Mater
Date: | 1987 |
Performers: | Mixed choir a capella |
Length: | 11.47 minutes |
Particulars: | Orbáns Stabat Mater is based on the melodic material of a 17th century Stabat Mater score, part of a handwritten collection of the Romanian monk Johannes Caioni (1629 – 1687) with secular and sacred music in Transylvania around 1650. Orbán converts the mediaeval verses into a contemporary music language in an impressive way: unisonously recited, then as counterpoint in two voices, ending in a cluster of crucifixion shouts. |
Textual variations: | The "Analecta"-version of the text has been used without any changes. |
