Jean Marie Plum (2 Stabats, one for organ solo)
About the composer
Jean-Marie Plum was born in Liège, Belgium, in 1899. He first studied piano and organ. During the first World War he took part in the resistance against the German invaders and eventually had to go in hiding for a long period, during which he taught himself composition. After the war he entered a religious order (l’Ordre des Frères Serviteurs de Sainte Marie), went to Rome to complete his theological studies. In 1927 Father Plum entered the monastery in Brussels where he build his reputation as a composer and became one of the leading figures of an artistic renewal in the Church.
He was known for his love of music, his amiability and his deep piety. In his works he combined the old Christian music with modern harmonies. His whole life he had a very delicate health and it was this chronic sinusitus that led to his death in 1944. Beside the Stabat Mater he also composed a adaptation for organ of the plain chant Stabat Mater sequence.

| Particulars: | The Stabat Mater, opus 192 seems to be divided into nine sections, though mostly you can hardly hear any separation. The exception is stanza 11 where the organ plays a short introduction based on the plain chant melody. Generally, the music is simple and melodious. |
