About the composer
Eric Tanguy, is a French composer, born in 1968 in Caen. A violinist by training, he studied composition with Horatiu Radulescu (1985-1988) and continued with courses at the Paris Conservatory. Tanguy composes for all combinations, from solo instrument to large orchestra, from accompanied voice to chorus. Voted composer of the year at the Victoires de la Musique Classique in 2004 and 2008, Tanguy also received the Grand Prix of the SACEM for his career as a whole (2012) as well as the Grand Prix Lycéen for composers (2014). As a teacher of composition at the École Normale de Musique in Paris, he also gives masterclasses and lectures in Europe and the USA.
About the Stabat Mater
12 singers (mixed choir) and cello
Eric Tanguy’s piece is in memory of Vivaldi’s Stabat Mater, which he heard as a child. This piece is for him one of the most beautiful works there is, That is why Tanguy wanted to write a Stabat Mater. ‘What fascinated me was to find the point of contact between the cello and the chorus, the difficulty that the chorus is singing a text, whereas the cello has none,’ he indicates. ‘The cello must echo the emotional content of the poem without giving the impression of mumbling a text that it could not pronounce. The work is found at the heart of the disc and at the heart of suffering: that of a mother who has lost her child.’
The composer doesn’t use the Latin text but a poem by Philippe Le Guillou (*1959). This text, written for Tanguy, is set in the language of today, referring to the Stabat Mater text (See: English translation, from the Cd booklet).
No colour bar as no Latin text has been used.
