About the Stabat Mater
Date: | 1999 |
Performers: | Mixed choir and orchestra |
Length: | 13.20 minutes |
Particulars: | The Stabat Mater is not divided into clear sections, though three different parts can be heard. It opens with a long orchestral introduction, creating a tragic, almost "gothic" atmosphere. The choir then sings the first two stanzas, concluded with parts of the first stanza, using musical themes from the intro. The third part consists of the last three stanzas, set on a more hopeful melody. |
Textual variations: | The Latin text is a mixture of "Vatican" and "Analecta" versions. The 19th stanza of the "Vatican" and the 18th stanza of the "Analecta" version are used. The last stanza includes the final "Amen". |
