In February 2024, Fred Luiten of Barok Vocaal organized a beautiful performance of Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater in Het Concertgebouw in Amsterdam; and we were there, offering our readers a discount and selling the Stabat Mater book during the interval. Now, two years later, Fred Luiten returns with a second edition, and this time the occasion is doubly special.
On Sunday afternoon, June 14, 2026 (starting at 3:00 PM), Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater will once again resound in the Concertgebouw, alongside works by Vivaldi. Fred Luiten has a clear ambition: to make June the annual month of the Stabat Mater in Amsterdam. He has already programmed a third concert for June 6, 2027 — a tradition in the making that we are happy to support. This year’s concert also marks a milestone: the 30th anniversary of Barok Vocaal.

Musicians
The soloists are Alexander Chance (countertenor) and Emöke Baráth (soprano), accompanied by the world-renowned baroque ensemble Il Gardellino, with Korneel Bernolet as conductor and harpsichordist.
Alexander Chance, who also performed at the 2024 edition, has quickly become one of the world’s foremost countertenors — hardly surprising when one of your singing teachers is your father, the legendary Michael Chance. He has worked in Bach’s Passions with John Eliot Gardiner and the Freiburger Barockorchester. Soprano Emöke Baráth is widely regarded as one of the most prominent sopranos in the early music world. Il Gardellino belongs to the select company of world-famous baroque ensembles. The concert is a nod to the very first Barok Vocaal concert, which featured Michael Chance and Emma Kirkby.
