On Sunday 11 October 2026, the Female Symphonic Orchestra Austria (FSOA) and the Kammerchor Salzburg, conducted by Silvia Spinnato, will perform Princess Amalie von Sachsen’s Stabat Mater in the Andräkirche in Salzburg.
Regular readers will know this work. In 2023 we added it to our collection after Dr. Petra Andrejewski introduced us to Amalie. Petra, who founded the publishing house Edition Serena to publish Amalie’s music and wrote her Ph.D. on the composer, also shared the audio recording with us. You can read more about the princess and her Stabat Mater on her page in our composer list.
Amalie composed her Stabat Mater in 1824 for choir, orchestra, soprano, alto and tenor. Its premiere, conducted by Carl Maria von Weber, took place just four weeks after the death of her teacher Franz Anton Schubert, whose corrections can still be found in the autograph score. It is wonderfully beautiful music with opera-like elements that reminds us of Mozart, and the closing fugue on “Paradisi Gloria” is a highlight. Its modern revival began in 2021 with a concert in Dresden, the first performance in almost two hundred years. Now it can be heard in Salzburg.
The concert, Konzert 3.0: Musik und Männerquote, is devoted to women composers and also includes music by Fanny Hensel-Mendelssohn and Marianna von Martines.
