In October 2023, I wrote about Giovanni Carlo Maria Clari (1677–1754) on this website. His Stabat Mater for four soloists, mixed choir, strings and continuo — first published in 1744 — was listed on our Missing CDs page, among more than 575 compositions that had never been recorded or performed in modern times. Thanks to Wim Looyestijn, who transcribed a handwritten manuscript copy into modern notation, we were able to share a digital version and sheet music. I ended that post with a hope: perhaps someone would be inspired to perform this work.
The answer came from Rome.
Giorgio Bottiglioni, director of the Italian baroque ensemble Furiosi Affetti, discovered Clari’s Stabat Mater through our website — and his ensemble will perform it on Saturday 19 September 2026 at the Chiesa di S. Maria della Verità in Viterbo, Italy. The concert begins at 21:00 and admission is free.
The programme features four soloists — Francesco Divito (sopranista), Aurelio Schiavoni (contraltista), Derlis Gonzalez Morel (tenor) and Federico Benetti (bass) — accompanied by strings, theorbo and harpsichord.
This is exactly the kind of occasion this website exists for.
