About the composer
Francis Bebey was born in 1929 in Cameroon. A many talented man, he sings, plays guitar and several African instruments, but is also a writer and poet (in 1994 he won the Prix Saint Exupéry for a book) and a composer. For the internationally known Kronos quartet he composed a piece for string quartet and pygmy flute.
Bebey died in Paris, France, on 28 May 2001.
About the Stabat Mater
Singer, guitar and accompaniment
This is a song, a kind of blues and also a short Stabat Mater, written and sung by an African performer.
Only the first line of the poem is used, and the text is about the need for love, in general, and for the virgin Maria in particular, expressed in a mixture of the languages English, French and Douala. The song text is:
no colorbar, only the first line of the poem is used.
