Bonaventure Petit
About the composer
The French composer Bonaventure François Joseph Petit, (Prades 1811- Perpignan 1901) received his first piano and harmony lessons from his father and his brother. Later on he studied in Paris with Jacques Fromental Halévy (harmony and composition) and with Louis James Alfred Lefébure-Wély (organ). In 1894 he was appointed professor of harmony and piano at the National School for Music of Perpignan (Roussillon). At the age of 83 he was considered an excellent teacher.
As an organist and composer he was an important person for the musical life in the region of the Roussillon. Yet his compositions were completely forgotten for a long time. Besides various operas, 18 masses, symphonic music, piano music and patriotic songs, he wrote three Stabat Maters: in 1842, 1866 and in 1874 (an adaptation of the Stabat Mater of 1866). Author and composer Hervé Rémond discovered the scores in 2013-2014. Rémond drew our attention to these compositions and to the performances he realized of these works.
