Willem Stoppelenburg
About the composer
The Dutch composer Willem Stoppelenburg, born in 1943, studied at the Groningen Conservatory and later the Amsterdam Conservatory (including piano, orchestral management). He conducted student orchestras as well as operettas, male choirs and oratorios. He developed as a composer in an organic performance practice, gradually from the seventies onwards, mainly through international conducting courses. For some time he was a member of the Dutch Composers Society and encouraged contemporary music in the northern region of the country. In the eighty’s he continued to profile himself and became a chairman of the Foundation Northern Composers, artistic director of the Flexica Ensemble and was closely involved in various contemporary (chamber music) concerts. In 1998 he received the Drentse Cultuurprijs, an important cultural award
His website contains most of relevant information and on YouTube you will find most of his compositions including his own musical biography in 99 fragments of approximately one minute: chamber music, songs, symphonies, ensembles, operas and oratorios.
