Josep Mir i Llussà
About the composer
Josep Mir’s date of birth is still unknown, but if we accept that he was Joan Mir i Llussà’s elder brother (a composer born in Solsona, Catalonia in Spain, and with a musical career which interwove with Josep’s sometimes, we could assume that he might have been born in the same city between 1700 and 1704. In April 1731 he began working as a chapel master for the Segovia Cathedral where he stayed till 1741. By then he was chosen for the cathedral of Valladolid. In 1751 he succeeded Pedro Rodrigo in the royal monastry of La Encarnacion in Madrid. He remained here till his death in 1764. Though Josep Mir carried out a high level of activity in the musical life of Madrid, his main task was always the composition of church music, materialised in an impressive catalogue of works. Due to his duty as a chapel master, Mir i Llussà composed a complete annual series of music for Christmas and other festivities.

| Particulars: | Actually the Stabat Mater contrasts (listening to the other compositions by Llussà) due to its archaism. It seems to be a reworking of a Stabat Mater for four voices by José Martinez de Arce (ca. 1660-1721). |
| Textual variations: | The "Vatican"-version of the text is used, but only eight stanzas (1,2,3,4,5,6, 9,10) of twenty, including the final "Amen" are sung. |
