About the Stabat Mater
Mixed choir, harp, violin and violoncello.
In 2011 the Foundation Music Now commissioned a relatively short work for mixed choir and piano on the text of (parts of) the Stabat Mater. The premiere was 2012 Good Friday. In 2013 van Merode arranged the piano part for harp, violin and cello. Gregorian elements and mainly French impressionist sounds alternate. The opening and closing parts are written in the Locrian scale, one of the seven major church keys. The composer strived to compose music that not only appeals to the imagination, but also can be performed by amateur choirs, singing in a church setting. Stanza 16 is in Modo Gregoriano
Stanza 13, 14 en 15 have been omitted.
